Quote: "He could have sworn a hand had closed around his throat. They were a lot like family, the people he’d met here. Peter had already made a penniless living out of taking bullets for strangers, but it was different at Landel’s. The patients reached out for each other with such
a horrible desperation that people you’d known for three days could make you cry for a week when they left. Isolation made the idea of losing any one of the five people around him so fucking sick that Peter was choking at the mention of it, let alone anything imagination or reality conjured up.

[...]

For a moment, he wished it was Grell down here with him. Someone who might possibly deserve it, who Peter could fight and feel no (or almost no) remorse for. Or maybe someone who could be reasoned with. Like Jessica.

Then that single, offhand thought made the whole world clear again. Peter straightened quite suddenly, taken aback.

He’d been going about this the wrong why. Trying to apply face to face logic to it when he needed face to omnipotent creator logic. This was some kind of climax to the story. For sure. What could possibly be worse than this? And who, looking back on it all, could the team stand to lose?

They had already brought in another Spider-Man. Jessica Drew was the same person as Peter Parker, and there was only one Indiana Jones.

'Indy. You have to shoot me.'"

Quote:
"Hijikata had seen men die before. He'd killed them himself, more times than not. But that--baring the one death he didn't want to think about--had been a swift thing, over before the victim knew what was happening.

This, this was different. And as much as his mind railed against it, wanted to deny what was happening, he could feel Souji growing weaker in his arms, could feel each horrible rasping breath he took and just how much effort it was for him to just keep breathing. As much as he wanted it, there was not going to be any salvation here. And both of them knew it, which was the worst part. And worse, he was torn by the desire for this to end, for Souji's obvious suffering to end, and the desperate, selfish need to hold onto him for as long as possible.

'I know,' he lied. Even now, Souji was trying to reassure him, and it was ripping him apart to listen to it, because he was sure it wouldn't be that simple. Neither of them knew what had gone wrong here, and they were stuck with that uncertainty. Hijikata was stuck with the knowledge that he was fine and Souji wasn't and it was all because he'd been too afraid to confront the truth earlier. If they had simply talked about it--but that didn't matter now. Regrets were meaningless. 'It's fine.' He pressed his forehead to the top of Souji's head, kept him cradled close and hoped like hell the younger man couldn't feel the tears that were slipping down his cheeks despite his determination to hold them back. 'Rest. It'll be fine.' For one of them, at least."

Quote: "Was it alright to sleep now, he wondered. Had the intercom come on and signaled the passing of the night? If he could just hold on until the speaker clicked on and night turned to day, he would be saved. Okita had seen the Institute bring people back from the brink of death before. He'd seen Guy return from the dead before. He was certain that if he could just stay awake long enough that this wouldn't be the end and he would open his eyes to see a pale white ceiling with a strange sense of relief. He almost imagined it even. He would sit up in bed with a headache and be taken to the cafeteria, his guard chatting like usual. He'd find Hijikata at one of the tables and apologize for the night before. Hijikata would be upset at first until Okita found a way to distract him, then he'd be angry and Okita would laugh. The days would pass on like usual and this nightmare would be left far behind them.

He almost thought it could happen, until he remembered that there were far more people here who did not come back after dying. The intercom was not turning on overhead. Hijikata was holding his hand so tightly it should have hurt, but Okita realized he couldn't feel it. The sensation was dulled along with the pain in his stomach and the heaviness in his chest. Everything felt distant. Detached. The intercom wasn't turning on. He couldn't hear what Hijikata said even though he knew he said something.

It's okay, Hijikata-san. I'm not going anywhere, you'll see. Do you think tomorrow will be sunny, too? Maybe we can go outside if it isn't too cold. Maybe then I can tell you-- Even though he opened his mouth, none of the words came out. The intercom hadn't turned on in time and he knew that now. There was no waking up from this. Weakly, he squeezed Hijikata's hand to reassure him and tell him what he could not say, the smile still lingering where it had always been. Then he closed his eyes as if to rest as his friend suggested and did not open them again."

Quote: "'Don't misunderstand me,' he calmly answered after a moment. 'I'm not sitting here because I enjoy this project. It's costly to maintain, and, quite frankly, taxing to run.' Sitting locked in their offices, twirling their proverbial mustaches, and playing the part of a wicked, mad scientist -- that was more Dr. Landel's style than their own.

[...]

Expression growing more stony, he gazed across his desk at Sechs. 'I'm curious. What lengths would you personally go to in order to protect everything you knew and cared about?'"

-----

"Sechs yearned for more answers; he wanted to demand the truth behind the reasoning of the institute's existence. He badly wanted to ask why, why was all of this happening? What was the point of it all? Yet the next words to come out from the stone cold officer left Sechs feeling taken aback. The Replica could only sit there, his scowling face briefly flickered into an expression of surprise. 'I...'

'What lengths would I go to protect everything... everyone I know and care about...' Sechs pondered to himself, his face shadowed by brooding mask. 'What do I have that is worthy enough to do all that? What would a true warrior do...?'

[...]

"I'd... I'd give my life," Sechs finally answered, his voice quiet but steady. It was a question which Sechs thought he could never answer until now, and his reply reverberated throughout his entire being. As his personal revelation nourished his warrior spirit, the trembling in his body gently eased off and his posture straightened up against the soldier's hold."

Mikado liked Snow. His mentality and resolution gave something wanted. There was only one thing, one little detail that caused hesitation. Other than the fact that Snow could likely crush Mikado's skull. "Ah, Snow-san...? How old is Serah-san?"

The fact of a suspicious circumstance unresolved."

Sitting in the middle of the Sun Room was a structure the likes of which hadn't been seen there since Guybrush's (non)famous Pilgrim Catapult™. A couch, chairs, blankets, and pillows had come together to form the ramparts of a most mighty fortress. It towered above the villagers of Kittendom (or would have, had they actually been around), shining in a stunning grey patchwork in the sunlight. And returning to the fort from the other end of the Sun Room, the mastermind behind the great structure proved to be none other than Scott's (current) arch-nemesis: Doom Girl.

After all, it was a cockroach: every twenty-something's nightmare when they landed that cheap, affordable, and secretly super gross place. (Though she proudly lacked any of that at her apartment.)

Only the cockroach—which she mentally decided to name "Bob," because Bob was always that unfortunate guy with an unfortunate existence and a name like Bob—wasn't scuttling off on other business. Oh, no, he decided to go Joe's Apartment on her and head right for her. Well, at least the streak of blood would have company.

She glanced down toward her shoes in disgust, because the last thing she wanted to do was destroy them, and she then she moved fast. Fast meant that she ran up a wall, and in an action straight out of the Matrix—which she absolutely loved for times like these—she ran almost horizontally before using the momentum to kick off and head straight for Bob.

And then Bob the Roach was dead, killed by a flashlight, because in those last few seconds she decided that she liked these shoes."
